Operators: Don't let your Emails or surfing give you away!

Post by The Poet » Tue Oct 25, 2011 7:50 am

Operators should take care that any Email address used in conjunction with your pirate radio broadcasting will not give away your location. Emails sent from Yahoo mail, Hotmail, and many others will display the I.P. address from where you sent your Email, and these may be tracked, in many cases, down to a particular city of origin. This is now being discussed on the HFU:

Google's Gmail, when sent from within the Gmail website, will only display IPs from Gmails own servers, and not yours.
I have been using it for years, it is easy to get used to the interface.

For web-surfing the various pirate radio sites, it is also a good idea to surf through a proxy server so that your actual I.P. address is not logged. As we have now sadly learned, not all moderators or administrators on pirate radio sites can be assumed to have your best interests at heart. In fact, one of the loudest supposed advocates of "protecting pirate operators" has turned out to be the MOST GUILTY of using this type of information for nefarious and even malevolent purposes; of course I am talking about 'Pat Murphy', also known as 'Commander Bunny/WBNY' of the FRN website. Absolutely DO NOT POST THERE without using a proxy. Frankly, as a station operator, you'll be better off not posting there at all. Murphy still has admin tools, can see your IPs addresses, and if you ever say the slightest thing to piss him off, you'll be added to his ever-growing enemies list, and he'll start collecting all kinds of information on you-- quite likely even paying for online background reports on you if he can ever discover your actual identity. Word to the wise.

The best rule when it comes to your actual identity is, TRUST NO ONE! Not even a maildrop operator! In these days of fast and easy eQSLs, there really is no need to maintain a maildrop and risk having the wrong people learn your real identity.

This site has a list of free proxies you can use for web surfing. Their speed varies, try experimenting with several to find what works best for you.
