There are quite a few Johnson plate-modulated AM transmitters on eBay right now, that make fine transmitters for pirate radio operations (after any required overhauling). They are the Valiant (150 watts carrier), Viking II (100wc) and Ranger (roughly 50 watts).
All of them should have the big electrolytic filter capacitors changed out if they are in a cardboard tube, and the waxy yellow paper caps in the case of the Valiant or Rangers... and possibly need other work as well.
It IS rather unusual the last few years, to see so many of them for sale at one time on eBay, as when I am posting this.

The Valiant, Ranger and Viking II all cover the amateur 160 meter band, so with a crystal and suitable antenna (which is a challenging problem because of the low frequency and size required), you can also hit the top of the AM broadcast band or 1710 kHz with them.
