Johnson Viking Valiant Front Panel Removal
(info from my files...)
Place the unit on the bench so that the front panel is clear of the bench, resting on the chassis (not the front panel).
Remove the knobs, to include the VFO knob.
Remove the meter and the rear EMI cover, if its still there.
Remove the VFO dial by removing the nuts from the backside of the front panel and the dial light assemblies, then the VFO pointer. Then, loosen the big brass nut for the VFO dial drive shaft. Be careful, however!! The flexible coupling behind the panel is phonelic and is kind of delicate.
After the panel comes off, you might want to remove the heavy brass VFO drive unit panel unit to relieve the stress on the coupler, etc. Again, you'll see what I mean when you get into it.
Finally, loosen and remove the hex nuts on the switches. Try and loosen the nuts on the toggle switches from behind so that you don't mar the front panel.
If your VFO box still has the "L" brackets installed, remove the panel screws that hold them. The panel should now come off.
In putting the panel back on, continue to be careful of the VFO dial drive assy. Don't let the panel drop and stress the coupler.
Re-align the VFO dial pointer just before the dail has to be put back on. Fire the rig up and align the freq. the dial to your receiver, then do the final re-assembly. Hopefully, I've not left something out.... 73 de K3HVG
